FAQs: Injection Moulding
  • The right masterbatch should be selected based on base polymer, processing method, processing temperature, product thickness, colour requirement, functional requirement, regulatory need and final application.

  • Carrier compatibility ensures proper melting, mixing and dispersion of pigments or additives in the base polymer. Poor compatibility can cause streaks, weak properties, poor surface finish and processing problems.

  • Masterbatch is used to add colour, opacity, UV protection, antistatic property, flame retardancy, antimicrobial performance, processing improvement or other functional properties to injection moulded plastic components.

  • Not always. The masterbatch carrier resin and additive chemistry must be compatible with the base polymer. A masterbatch designed for PP may not give the same performance in ABS, Nylon, PET or PC.

  • Moisture can cause silver streaks, bubbles, splay marks, poor surface finish, brittleness and degradation. This is especially important for hygroscopic polymers such as Nylon, PET, PC and ABS.

  • Yes. Masterbatch can influence shrinkage and warpage if the carrier, filler, pigment or additive system changes the crystallinity, cooling behaviour or flow pattern of the base polymer.

  • Food-contact applications require masterbatches made from suitable pigments, additives and carrier resins that comply with applicable food-contact regulations. The product should be supported with regulatory declarations and traceability.
