AUTOMOTIVE COMPOUNDS
Automotive companies are constantly increasing the performance requirements
of Plastics used. As a result higher performance standards are being
set, and longer times to failure of the Polymer Components are specified.
The Polymers going into Automotive Application should have very
high level of asthetic appeals as well as balanced physico mechanical
properties.
Various types of polymers are used in for manufacturing different
types of parts for automobiles.For example for bimper PP/EPDM alloys
are used.For trims high impact,PP is used.For Dash Boards,Talc Filled
PP is used.
The colouring of these plastics are also of greater interest that
the ingredients used for colouring these components should not have
nay effect on the Polymer aging properties. Normally automotive
components are in Grey Colour. To achieve this Grey colour, carbon
black is used. Experimental results have shown that the carbon black
added can reduce the aging properties of the polymer. Similarly,
the talc used to enhance the mechanical properties of basic Polypropylene
can also have an effect on ageing. Unless otherwise these are properly
stabilised with various functional additives. The specifications
of automotive compounds are difficult to achieve.
